Chassis No. 1960 Engine No. 1 966 Produced from October, 1958 to August, 1959 in very limited numbers, the 220SE, was the last of the "Ponton" series with design cues from the Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan. The 220SE features a unitized body/frame construction and fully independent suspension. Fitted with a 2.2 L straight 6 engine, aluminum head, overhead camshaft, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Ordered and delivered new to Frederick Margulies (a U.S. citizen) in Stuttgart, Germany; this particular 220SE was built to North American specifications as Mr. Margulies would eventually bring the car back home to Pennsylvania. Currently Finished in Blue-Green over Red leather, paired with a tan convertible top, this fuel-injected Cabriolet makes an excellent candidate for a weekend driver or respectable base to take to the next level. Largely original with a solid body throughout, the 220 has survived quite nicely over the years. Great care has been taken to preserve the originality of the upholstery and woodwork adorning the cockpit. The Cabriolets original interior is very much complete and intact. As expected from any 50-year-old surviving upholstery, the leather seats have acquired patina and separation, although the dash and cabin wood remain crack free and very complete. Exterior brightwork has lost its luster in areas, such as the bumpers. The finish of the Cabriolet displays an older repaint from Light Green to the current with straight body panels and good fitment. The underside is free of any corrosion issues, while the engine bay and boot resembles the rest of the car, very original and solid. Original spare assembly and jack remain within the luggage compartment. This SE comes equipped with the more desirable standard manual clutch, power-assisted brakes and steering. Other accessories include Hella driving lamps, along with a complete set of workshop manuals, Original Owner's manual, Service booklet, International Vehicle Registration, European Service Station book, Parts Catalog, as well as the original Mercedes-Benz DataCard and Warranty Cards. This 220SE cabriolet is remarkably versatile as a runabout or tourer while best representing the Ponton era for Mercedes-Benz. These wonderful four-person open cars are easily driven, quite reliable and hold great potential for investment.
