This 1956 Continental Mark II is remarkably well-documented with ownership and mileage history back to new and service records dating back to the 1980s. When new, this example was the grand prize at a fashion show and charity auction sponsored by Christian Dior in 1956. The winner, John Hughes, a prominent tax attorney, author, big game hunter and world traveler, kept the car over twenty years, primarily in La Jolla, California. The California black plate is included in the sale. The Mark II was repainted once in the correct color to a nice driver standard in 1985 by its second owner; the car has always been garaged and the paint has held up well. Panels are straight with good gaps and no evidence of accident damage. Door, hood and trunk alignment is also very good and all open and close easily. There are no known rust issues topside or underneath, although there are a few chips (repaired), minor scratches and hairline cracks, all consistent with age -- the finish shows well overall. Bumpers, chrome, trim, emblems, hubcaps and grille are outstanding with no discernible hazing, pitting or peeling. Glass is original and in very good condition, with only slight yellowing at the edges. The front seats were partially recovered in the 1980s in leather, but the color and grain match to the rear seat is exceptional. The rear seat is original and showing minor wear on the front edge of the seat bottom. Door panels, chrome door jamb trim, carpet, dash and headliner are in excellent original condition; custom-made mats line the front floors. All of the factory gauges are working, including the clock and the SIP indicator in the center of the left gauge. The factory town and county AM radio remains intact but does not work. This was not a factory a/c car, but in the late 1980s an air conditioning system was transplanted from a 1957 Mark II so it is correct in both form and function. All of the heater and a/c controls work smoothly, the blowers work properly and the a/c blows cool, but not ice cold by modern standards. All six power windows are working. The car also has its original Continental keys -- the blanks, unique to a Mark II, are no longer made. These are a real treasure. Under the hood is the correct 368 cubic inch Y-block V8; both the engine and transmission were rebuilt in the early 1990s. Mileage, at 89,073, is actual and backed by an extensive dossier of ownership and service records. This example has been fortunate to have owners who were meticulous about maintenance -- everything about the car is in good working order. Brakes were rebuilt around 2004 and both the steering and brakes feel as good as any Continental I have driven. Tires are B.F. Goodrich bias-ply whitewalls; two spares are included in the trunk (along with the factory-supplied jack and leather hold-down strap). The tires are newer with plenty of tread and no trace of dry-rot. Number 3380 comes with a trove of documentation and memorabilia, including the original owner's manual, The Continental Story promotional book, folding sales brochure, technical data book, parts book, authenticity manual, Continental Echoes phonograph album, a 1956 issue of Road and Track featuring the Mark II, a vintage Mark II model car (still in original packaging), an oil painting of the car commissioned by the second owner, plus decades' worth of receipts, bills of sale, detailed ownership history, etc. All of these items are, of course, included for the next owner's stewardship. A full-size car cover and a unique custom-fitted partial cover for the greenhouse portion are also included. This example has been regularly shown at LCOC events and has won awards in each of the last three decades.
