24,797 ORIGINAL MILES. Original paint, interior, engine, and top. Stunning survivor recently serviced. New tires all around. Documented. We hauled this incredible 1964 Impala SS convertible out of a garage near our shop last fall, following the owner"s untimely passing. Apparently he bought the car more than two decades ago and stashed it away in his garage sometime in the early 1990s. Showing just 24,797 ORIGINAL MILES, this is one of the most impressive survivors we"ve ever seen. The Ermine White paint is almost entirely original save for a touch-up on the trunk lid, which was professionally done and completely invisible—you wouldn"t even know about it without me telling you. The body panels are 100=riginal to the car and have never been hit or rusty and it fits together extremely well—you guys who know original cars know what I"m talking about when I say it just “feels right.' The paint has a soft gloss that"s perfectly appropriate to the period, but shockingly it has almost no chips or nicks from regular use. All the chrome is original, so it"s 1960s production chrome, but again, it"s in remarkably good condition and the neat engine-turned inserts on the side trim are quite crisp and sharp. The black bucket seat interior is likewise 100criginal, right down to the carpets. No brittleness, no popped seams, and even the foam underneath remains firm and comfortable. The gauges are all fully functional, the AM radio works, the warning lights that monitor temperature keep an eye on things (showing “COLD' when you first start it up) and, well, it"s like it"s 1964 all over again. The center console and bucket seats were unique to the SS, and again, the engine-turned panels are quite nicely preserved. I mean, even the pedal pads still show crisp markings and almost zero wear! In addition, the top is original and works properly and that"s the original rear curtain, too. Power it down and there"s an original black vinyl boot to cover it up and the trunk is finished with factory-issued spatter paint, original mats, and a matching fifth wheel and tire. The engine is the original 283 cubic inch V8 with its original Rochester 2-barrel carburetor. Still wearing Chevy Orange paint, ‘283 Turbo-Fire" decals, and a stock air cleaner, it looks exactly the way you"d expect after fifty years. Clean, tidy, but not restored. We detailed it quite a bit to get it cleaned up, but we were careful to leave the factory finishes along and wherever it was feasible, the factory-issued equipment stayed in place. Correct GM-stamped hoses and tower hose clamps make it look right, and there"s even a bottle of washer fluid concentrate still hanging on the inner fender. It starts easily and runs quite well. The PowerGlide 2-speed automatic shifts cleanly and with highway-friendly gears in back, it"s a comfortable highway cruiser that has plenty of punch when you need it. And thanks to the 7.50-14 BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires that we just installed, it looks right and drives like it should. This car is fully documented with details like the original bill of sale, dealer invoice, and owner"s manual, not to mention the service stickers in the door jambs that show 3858 miles on the clock when it was last serviced decades ago. A stunning survivor in the truest sense of the word, this is the Impala that serious collectors have been looking for. With authenticity mattering more and more, cars like this represent a road map for restorers and offer a unique glimpse into our past that restored cars just don"t.
