Things of quality have no fear of time. Nobody's quite sure who said it but this 1946 Ford Super Deluxe convertible lives it every day. Sporting a restoration that's coming up on 30 years old it still looks fantastic and if you haven't owned a flathead Ford yet you're really missing out on one of motoring's great machines. Looking like it's three years old not three decades the restoration is holding up extremely well. A lot of that is due to the quality of the workmanship and the excellent care it has received in the years since certainly deserves some credit too. Looking at the Ford color charts for 1946 this one wears a lovely coat of Tacoma Cream a traditional color that looks best on convertibles of the '40s. This was a well-preserved original car prior to the restoration and it still carries 100/f its factory sheetmetal panels so you know it came from someplace warm and dry. Everything fits together quite well including the pointed hood which is notoriously difficult to fit on these cars and the doors which flare gracefully into the rocker panels. Ford changed the trim from year to year to differentiate the cars and this one wears plenty of brightly polished stainless to complement the chrome bumpers with much of it highlighted with red accents that really pop against the tan bodywork. The interior seems to defy the years with handsome Bedford cord upholstery accented by brown vinyl caps on the seats giving it a very authentic 1940s look. Simple brown door panels are highlighted by attractive door handles with Bakelite knobs and the lovely light-colored woodgraining on the dash and window sills is expertly done. Even on Deluxe models Ford supplied a rubber front mat for front seat passengers while the rear seat received nice-looking tan carpets. The factory Town & Country radio still works and has been upgraded with an FM converter inside so it really delivers the best of both worlds and there's an accessory heater under the dash for those cool evenings. The tan canvas top is older but features a new vacuum pump that drops it into the well with the touch of a button where it's hidden by a matching boot. The trunk is also superbly detailed with a correct rubber mat reproduction cardboard panels and a matching spare tire. Mechanically the 239 cubic inch flathead V8 is a joy to drive. With a fresh carburetor up top this little V8 makes great sounds and has an over-achieving attitude that makes it a joy on the road. Agile torquey and ready to go it shouldn't be judged on its size alone. It's also nicely detailed and accurately restored right down to the hose clamps and cloth-covered wiring harness. It shows only modest signs of use another testament to the quality of the restoration and the chassis looks pretty much the same. The brakes bearings and hubs were rebuilt about 2000 miles ago and the generator was rebuilt to work with the 8-volt electrical system for improved starting. The dual exhaust system featured glasspack-style mufflers for that traditional flathead sound but otherwise it's pretty stock right down to the 6.00x16 wide whites on original steel wheels. A delightful vintage convertible that lives up to the flathead hype. Astoundingly well preserved it's ready to go for another 30 years. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
