Because quite honestly early Mustangs just don't last very long around here and this nicely done '65 coupe hits all the right notes. Starting with that elegant Ivy Green paint job this pony is easy to appreciate. It's not in-your-face bright but you can definitely tell someone spent a ton of time and effort making it look this good. There was a brief thought of turning this smooth-running Mustang into a daily driver but the quality of the work was just too nice to subject it to the rigors of the daily grind. But with that in mind it was restored using modern urethane paint enhancing the old girl's sheetmetal in a very pronounced way while being far more durable than the old enamel. Look at the way the light in our studio plays off the surfaces and then imagine what it would look like out in the sun! All the usual Mustang goodies are there from the corral on the front grille the appropriate 289 badges and the 3-element taillights that have been a design statement for fifty years now. Nothing has been changed deleted or shaved just carefully polished and reassembled to make this the kind of car you look forward to taking out for the night. The unusual and equally elegant Palomino Pony interior was installed just a few years ago and of course looks factory fresh in just about every way. Low-back buckets are comfortable thanks to fresh foam underneath and the traditional Mustang interior is a very stylish place to spend some time. The door panels carpets and headliner were all replaced and the restorers were wise to keep it the way the factory delivered it so there's nothing that looks out of place. A color-matched steering wheel looks great without any major signs of age and use and the original gauges are in excellent condition with bright markings and clear lenses. The A/C unit looks like the original and blows ice cold so you can see how easy it would be to drive this one every day and even the original AM radio remains in the dash. The restored trunk features a correct mat and full-sized spare tire just in case. What would a first-generation Mustang be without a 289 cubic inch V8 under the hood? Fully rebuilt and ready to rock this C-code small block packs plenty of punch in stock spec and looks quite correct. There's a gold air cleaner with reproduction decal on top matching valve covers and Ford Blue paint on the block itself. The original A/C compressor dominates the top of the engine bay and wears correct tags and even little stuff like the hose clamps are correct reproductions. Backed by a 3-speed manual transmission it's a lot of fun to drive with that bubbly V8 exhaust note and with 2.80 gears out back it's well-suited to highway driving and actually pulls down decent fuel mileage too. Familiar spinner hubcaps always look right on coupes and the wheels are fitted with recent 195/75/14 whitewall radials to keep with the low-key look. You can see why this one was a favorite and also why it was just too nice to stick to the original plan of driving it every day.
