By the time 1970 rolled around the Mustang and Camaro had established the validity of the pony car market. It took Dodge 5 years after the creation of the Mustang to unveil their entry into the pony car market with the now infamous Dodge Challenger. Wildly unique and capable of packing some serious horsepower under the hood the Dodge Challenger quickly became a hit on the street and at the dragstrip. Capable of housing any of Dodge's engine combinations in an E-body the Challenger became the go to choice for those that wanted an incredible power plant under the hood. It's easy to see why they were so popular especially when you look over this highly optioned 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T that features a vibrant color combination and a monster 426 HEMI under the hood. But before we get too far let's first decode the VIN and fender tag: VIN: JS23R0B212809 • J: Dodge Challenger • S: Special Price Class • 23: 2-door hardtop • R: 426 HEMI • 0: 1970 • B: Hamtramck MI plant • 212809: Sequential production number And now for the fender tag: • E74: 426 HEMI 8-barrell • D21: 4-speed transmission • JS23: Dodge Special Price Class 2-door hardtop • R0B: 426 HEMI 8-barrell engine 1970 Hamtramck MI assembly plant • 212809: Vehicle sequence number • FC7: Plum Crazy lower color • H6XW: High price class white bucket seats • C07 December 7th 1969 build date • 062063: Order number • FC7: Plum Crazy upper color • A33: Track Pack • A62: Rallye dash • C16: Console with woodgrain • C55: Bucket seats • J54: Sport hood • M21 drip rail moldings • N41 Dual exhaust • N42: Bright exhaust tips • R22: AM 8-track radio • V9W: White tail stripe • Y05: Built to USA specs • 26: Radiator 26-inch core • EN1: End Thanks to a high quality frame-up restoration performed by Aloha Restoration in Port Washington Wisconsin this Challenger practically presents better than it did when it left Chrysler's storied Hamtramck Michigan manufacturing facility. Today the body is covered in a fresh correct coat of the highly desirable Plum Crazy Purple. At the front of the car a 1970-exclusive grille hangs a bright ''Challenger R/T'' script between upgraded headlights clear parking lamps and a mirror-like bumper. At the top of the car a sporty twin-scoop hood shines in front of like-new glass that's framed by fresh stainless trim and capped by a roof covered in the Plum Crazy Purple. At the sides of the car prominent profile lines hang additional ''Challenger and R/T'' scripts and flush body-matched door handles between dent-free rocker trim and small body-matched racing mirrors. And at the back of the car a V9W coded thin white tail stripe covers the end of the trunk and quarters and houses the fourth Challenger R/T chrome emblems. Finishing off the look is a chrome rear bumper that sits above the dual exhausts equipped with bright exhaust tips. Lift the correct J54 coded sport hood and you'll find a feared period correct 426 HEMI V8 lying under the hood. From the 26'' radiator to the gorgeous HEMI to the red top battery everything in this engine bay appears straight out of 1970. The block looks fantastic against the plum crazy purple engine bay as it sits covered in a correct coat of the famous HEMI orange. At the top of the 425hp monster you'll find a HEMI Orange air filter that wears the HEMI name. Below the air filter is a 4-barrell carburetor that pushes the air fuel mixture into the hemispherical combustion chambers. From there spent gasses travel out correct cast iron headers before traveling through dual exhausts. The extensive restoration that brought the Challenger to its current condition didn't just include the body and engine bay from underneath the Challenger you really get a feel for how much work was put into this E-body. At the front you'll see the HEMI that is surrounded by a torsion bar front suspension. Bolted to the block is an A833 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to a Dana 60 rear axle for aggressive launches off the line. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel drum brakes and in front of those brakes are 15'' Rallye rims that have been wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas GT rubber. Open the Plum Crazy Purple door and you'll be greeted by a completely restored white vinyl interior. Two front bucket seats are separated by a woodgrain console with the pistol grip shifter for the 4-speed manual transmission. In front of the driver is the wood grain Rallye steering wheel and instrument cluster that houses the 150MPH speedo 8000 RPM tachometer analog clock and fuel temp oil pressure and voltage meter. Above the seats is a bright white headliner that shows no signs of wear. Like new black carpet lines the floor with matching Challenger R/T floor mats. Behind the front bucket seats are the rear bucket seats capable of comfortably housing two more of your closest friends. The sale of this incredible Challenger includes the original owner's manual receipts from its extensive restoration and a copy of the original title. The Challenger might have been late to the Pony Car market but when they entered the race they did so with an incredible machine. The 1970 Challenger quickly became very feared from stoplight to stoplight and established itself as one of the meanest American built machines of the Pony Car era. Here's your chance to own a legitimate 1970 HEMI Challenger in a gorgeous shade of Plum Crazy Purple. Give us a call today because a HEMI this nice won't last that long under our showroom lights.
