Not long after Porsche introduced the 911 they augmented the original 911 coupe with a radical innovative open model the 911 Targa. Porsche ever cognizant of the innate importance of handling realized that a conventional cabriolet or speedster unacceptably compromised chassis stiffness as well as added performance hampering weight with the chassis stiffeners needed to compensate for the torsional stiffness lost when the roof was removed. Porsche’s engineering-based solution was to integrate a roll hoop accented with brushed stainless steel to replace much of the coupe roof’s structural integrity. It was a brilliant solution that has added ‘targa’ to automobile jargon. First produced in late 1966 the original 911 Targa was a truly open car with soft top and a folding rear ‘soft window’ that has become particularly favored by Porsche enthusiasts. In contrast with later fixed rear window Targas the early soft-window Targas when fully opened up are true open cars. The unmistakable roll-bar stamped “Targa” on each side also allowed for Porsche to call the open 911 “the world’s first safety convertible” meeting new and demanding US DOT rollover requirements. This gorgeous white Soft Window Targa finished in its original color combination is one of only 718 ever made and is absolutely exquisite from top to bottom after a superbly done cosmetic restoration. It features an expertly redone interior with all new period correct seats and panels new soft window and matching boot a period Blaupunkt AM/FM push button radio with Hirschmann power antenna and fog lights. Sitting on Fuchs alloy wheels with Yokohama tires this numbers-matching Porsche is from the first year for the Targa has the very rare and desirable soft rear window comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and is believed to be a Southern California car from new. Any early 911 is very collectible but this rare and pristine early Soft Window Targa is an order of magnitude better. Price: $155,000
