Streetside Classics is fast becoming El Camino central and while we've got dozens of Chevy's ever-popular truck/car in our showroom few have stories that can compare to the one that comes with this '72 Elky. Secreted away for more than two decades it was recently disinterred from its hibernation and comprehensively freshened and the result is sure to be a favorite for fans of the unusual. Sitting since the early '90s someone recognized the potential in the El Camino and carefully put it up on blocks to keep it as well preserved as possible. In 2013 the time came to finally give it the attention it deserves so it was treated to a comprehensive cosmetic makeover. Starting with fresh paint in the original code 48 Sequoia Green it was stripped painted buffed and polished to its current spectacular condition. To give it a bit of a twist traditional SS stripes were added along with a cowl-induction hood but the stripe color is more of a light beige that works perfectly with the code 732 Antique interior and gives it a unique look. It's also a rather rare El Camino in that it originally came with a vinyl top which has been replaced with matching tan vinyl although it was originally equipped with a green top. Then there's the custom-made tonneau cover that fits snugly and covers the restored bed which has been covered in perhaps the nicest spray-on bedliner we've ever seen. There's just no evidence of cut corners anywhere on the car and all the workmanship is extremely impressive. And thanks to that long-term storage the shiny trim remains in excellent condition as well. The stunning Antique interior is just as the factory intended with a brand new reproduction seat cover joining very nicely preserved original door panels and dashboard. It's bright and pleasant inside and the contrasting colors makes for a very elegant presentation particularly in an El Camino. Factory A/C is always a welcome addition as is the AM/FM radio in the dash which now powers a pair of speakers in their own enclosures behind the seat. You'll also appreciate the column-shifted TH350 3-speed automatic transmission which frees up space in the center for a third passenger and an aftermarket cup holder setup that's surprisingly convenient. There's a bit of storage space behind the seats but with that snug-fitting tonneau-cover the bed becomes perhaps the world's largest trunk. All the numbers line up right as this is the car's original numbers-matching 350 cubic inch V8. Nicely detailed with Chevy Orange paint and a stock air cleaner it's pretty much the way the factory built it four decades ago. It's been comprehensively serviced and sorted following that long period of storage so it starts quickly and easily and runs superbly. The brakes were obviously in need of attention after all that inactivity so it has a new master cylinder and the transmission was rebuilt in April of 2013 so it's good to go. There's also a fresh reproduction dual exhaust system that fits well and sounds right and while the chassis is original you can see why this car was selected for its future potential; it's pretty darned clean. Attractive SS wheels give the El Camino a sporty attitude and wear 225/70/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials at all four corners. This is a neat unusual and nicely finished El Camino that really stands out and in our showroom full of high-quality Elkys that's really saying something. Call today!
