For some VW enthusiasts there's a definite line in the sand between the early cars and the later Super Beetle. If you're one of the guys who likes the feel of the older cars then this 1971 Beetle convertible is worth checking out. Bright colors always work well on the peppy VW Beetle particularly the convertibles since they're always out in the sun. Earlier cars like this have a charm all their own but it isn't until you park it next to a later model that all the changes are evident. For purists the charm of the old-school flat windshield cars is that old car feeling which we certainly appreciate. But the basics still apply including the rounded fenders and hood all of which are in excellent condition here. The doors fit well and the paint shines with the depth that only modern finishes can provide. Given this car's overall condition we strongly suspect that it has spent its life in a warm climate and thanks to the comprehensive restoration a few years ago it looks like it should cost a lot more than it does. Bright chrome bumpers are simple but effective and with the smaller marker lights it's instantly identifiable as a Beetle. The inside of this Bug will look immediately familiar to any VW fan from the tall bucket seats to the insanely simple dashboard. Correct textured vinyl seat covers look authentic and if they're anything like the originals they'll wear like granite and with that texture they're comfortable even in the sunny convertible. No-nonsense floor coverings are durable and functional but along the way this one has also acquired a woodgrained center console that adds some warmth to the interior not to mention a pair of useful cup holders. The single speedometer has big clear markings that are more 1950s than 1970s and there's a fuel gauge neatly integrated into the design one of the more delightful details of the VW's simplicity. It has been fitted with a later AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit but a return to the stock radio would really make this Bug shine. For inclement weather there's a great-fitting white convertible top with a full headliner so it feels expensive and seals up better than convertibles costing four times as much. Up front there's adequate storage in the trunk area which uses what appear to be original mats and includes a jack assembly. The 1600 cc flat four needs no introduction and appears to be pretty much as the factory intended. With all the upgrades and modifications that are available for these cars it's getting harder to find one that hasn't been creatively altered by previous owners but purists know that keeping it the way the factory intended is the best way to ensure reliability. A lot of new parts including a rebuilt carburetor mean that it runs quite well starting with that characteristic VW exhaust note and cruising happily with modern traffic. The 4-speed manual gearbox has light clutch action and all-too-familiar shifter action but it's easy to master and makes the VW an experience rather than just transportation. The underside is clean albeit not detailed for show with good floor pans and signs of conscientious maintenance. Standard VW steel wheel with shiny chrome hubcaps look great and carry 165R15 radials for an old-time look with modern handling. Looking for a fun Beetle but want an old-fashioned vibe? This is the right car. Nicely restored and ready to have fun all it needs is you. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom. For more information please call or toll free .
