Jean Daninos was the owner of Forges et Ateliers de Construcion d’Eure et de Loire a company in Paris that made machine tools before the Second World War but afterwards began concentrating on metal office furniture and domestic cabinets. Facel as the company was known also subcontracted parts for French automobile manufacturers and in 1950 displayed a gorgeous refined coupe body on a Bentley Mark VI chassis then a similar coupe on the Simca Vendome platform. Daninos was brought up in the tradition of the great French Grandes Routieres from Delahaye Delage Talbot-Lago and Bugatti and was determined to continue the tradition after the war. The Bentley and Simca were precursors to the Facel Vega which was introduced in 1954 with Chrysler V-8 power and TorqueFlite transmission. The Facel Vega was the first of the postwar Euro-American hybrids and it remained in production into the early 1960s. Total production of the Chrysler-powered Facels has never been established but the number is likely under 1000. Their reputation for design style performance and quality has encouraged their survival. This 1961 Facel Vega HK500 is one of the most beautiful examples in existence. A meticulously restored car it is finished in black and features chrome wire wheels with Pirelli blackwall tires and attractive twin radio antennae. Typical of a Facel Vega the interior is also lavishly appointed with red leather black carpets power windows and has been upgraded to meet modern collectors’ standards with a beautifully integrated Vintage Air air conditioning system. Professionally installed the A/C vents and controls have been integrated with the dashboard in a factory-like installation that retains the period correct look. Under the hood is a detailed engine bay housing Chrysler’s 383 cubic inch V-8 with dual 4-barrel carburetors and an alternator to accommodate the powerful air conditioning system. An extremely attractive car from any angle that is beautifully presented as well as equipped with tastefully upgraded A/C it is a perfect automobile to drive tour and enjoy in sublime comfort.
