The 111-Series Mercedes-Benz automobiles are highly regarded among informed collectors for their combination of excellent build quality sophisticated design rigid chassis comfortable ride great roadholding and luxurious appointments. The pinnacle of this impressive series is the 280SE 3.5 powered by Mercedes-Benz’s first V-8 engine a sophisticated light alloy head overhead valve design employing the highly sophisticated Mercedes-Benz/Bosch mechanical fuel injection system. Available only as a coupe or cabriolet from 1969 to 1971 the 280SE 3.5 was a limited production expensive high performance luxury automobile costing between $13000 and $15000 in the United States at a time when such money could buy two loaded Corvettes. Thanks to fuel injection and transistorized ignition the 3.5 made 230 horsepower 25 per cent more than the straight-six in the standard 280SE and could get to 60 in an impressive 9.5 seconds. Interior amenities were excellent as well with air conditioning electric windows leather seats wood trim and power steering and brakes.Only 4502 280SE 3.5s were built during its short production life making it one of the most desirable and collectible of all classic models from Mercedes-Benz. This highly original car has always been in superb condition. It was recently repainted in its original color gold metallic. The black leather in the front seats has also been redone but the original and very well preserved black leather rear seats have been sympathetically retained. It has the desirable sliding sunroof as well as the floor-mounted shifter for the automatic gearbox. The other luxury appointments that distinguish the 280SE 3.5 such as the Becker AM/FM radio power windows and air conditioning all function properly. Out on the road it runs and drives extremely well as a car of its caliber should. Its well kept condition is a testament to the craftsmanship and engineering that Mercedes-Benz put into these cars when they were built and to a life with caring custodians who have treated it consistently and well. A practical comfortable and beautiful classic this 280SE 3.5 has many miles of enjoyment in it. Price: $95,000
