In the 1990s Japan's biggest car markets battled it out for technological superiority and few will argue that the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 wasn't the most advanced machine of its time. With two turbos all-wheel-drive 4-wheel-steering and every piece of electronic wizardry available at the time it was a technological tour-de-force. It also worked pretty well as a sports car with eyeball-flattening acceleration and cornering abilities that rivaled fly-paper for grip. Today finding one of these that is still fully functional let alone unmodified and nicely maintained is virtually impossible. This 1996 VR4 breaks the mold offering a low-mileage original car that has not been raced or abused by a kid on the second-hand market. They're also really nice cars to drive with a great ride/handling balance and reasonable fuel economy. Of course the white paint helps keep a low profile and it's a refreshing change from all the red and black ones you've been looking at right? The paint remains excellent with only a few normal signs of use but there's no question this car was someone's cherished toy and not a street brawler. By 1996 Mitsubishi had toned down the look so it's more integrated smoother and less... out there than the earlier models. The headlights were inspired by Samurai war helmets and the formerly wild spoilers and wings were far more mainstream. And all of it is in excellent shape. Inside the VR4's interior is more cockpit than sports car with deeply sculpted power buckets that do all but grab you to hold you in place during cornering. A full complement of analog gauges keep an eye on vitals because the engineers finally realized that needles and numbers work better than digital bar graphs. This car represents the best of the best in performance and looks but you'll find the cockpit inspired interior is what really helps set this car off and complete the package. The stereo system lags a bit carrying a cassette player instead of a CD but otherwise it carries almost all the goodies we expect today. The tan leather the matching carpets and even the cargo bay remain in excellent condition with only light signs of use. The 3000GT's big claim to fame was its twin-turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 which cranked out a very impressive 320 horsepower in 1996 (remember the Corvette at that time got a boost to 330 in the form of the heavily revised LT4 small block). Linked to a 6-speed manual and all-wheel-drive it would scratch and claw its way to insane speeds regardless of the weather and held on like a cat on shag carpet. The engine bay shows few modifications most notably an air filter but nothing that would indicate racing or abuse and certainly nothing that over-stresses this bulletproof powertrain. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are confidence-inspiring and 18-inch chrome alloys with 245/40/18 Dunlops give it a modern look. Just your average ordinary daily-driver supercar with built-in Japanese reliability. These are the Next Big Thing and this one is definitely a keeper. Call today!
