Perhaps the most dramatic change to Triumph's long-running, legendary TR range, came in 1961, with the introduction of the TR4. It featured a completely redesigned body, beautifully styled by Michelotti. This was equipped with roll-up windows (a first for TRs) and a very capacious boot. At the same time, the engine displacement was increased from 2 to 2.2 litres, for improved performance. Additionally, a unique hardtop with a removable centre section was offered as an option. This predated Porsche's 'Targa' top (the now accepted name for such a roof on any car) by some five years. The centre panel could in turn, be replaced with an easily stowed vinyl insert and folding frame called a Surrey Top. (The entire Triumph hard top assembly is commonly (but incorrectly) referred to as a Surrey Top, though in reality, this only refers to the vinyl centre panel.) In 1965, Triumph updated the TR4 with a new chassis that featured independent rear suspension (IRS). This dramatically improved the handling. (A point amply proven by a team win, with a 1st, 2nd & 3rd finish in class at Sebring.) This particular car, is a lifelong California example, with just one owner since 1971. A very late production model (it is actually registered as a '68) it features not only the superb independent rear suspension but also the extremely desirable Surrey Top. The body is very straight and rust free and the interior is in great shape. On the road, it pulls cleanly through all the gears and steers and brakes straight. To find a lifelong California example of one of these IRS cars is rare enough but couple that with the even rarer Surrey Top and this becomes a very rare opportunity indeed. Price: $32,500
