The Pontiac GTO needs no introduction -- it's the most sought-after Pontiac of the 1960s and holds a well-earned place in muscle car history. This 1965 GTO convertible is a very nicely done tribute. It is, of course, actually a highly optioned LeMans convertible but it has the correct GTO tail light treatment, hood, console, floor shifter and badging. This example has been a Georgia and South Carolina car for the last 30 years, and the current owner of 15 years has carefully restored it to an excellent driver standard. The car saw a frame-off a few years ago with all new body mount bushings; there is one small repaired area in the floor pan, but the floors and rockers are all original and in very good shape. Topside paint and trim pieces are in nice driver condition; glass, rubbers and the convertible top are excellent. The black on red is a classic color combination and I can't drive it anywhere without people stopping to ask me about it -- it's no doubt a head turner. The interior also shows well; the seats were reupholstered in correct materials about five years ago; the center console is an original unit (which I actually prefer to a reproduction); it does show some minor patina but still looks great. Door panels are brand new. All of the switches, indicators and gauges are working with the exception of the clock. Under the hood is a Tri-power 389 cubic inch V8 out of a '63 Bonneville. It was rebuilt by a Pontiac race mechanic in Talladega, and the two-speed automatic transmission was also rebuilt -- the drivetrain has fewer than 500 miles on it. The three Rochester two-barrel carbs were also rebuilt and properly tuned; the car also has a brand new alternator, brake booster, exhaust and fuel tank. As you can see in the photos, it's very nicely detailed under the hood. The car starts, runs and drives beautifully; the induction sound is amazing when those extra two carbs open up. Steering and brakes feel great. Overall I'd characterize it as a very nice driver with many new or restored parts, but shy of concours quality. It is a very well sorted, turn-key example indistinguishable from a GTO except to somebody with a PHS report in his hands.
