Chassis 58YG. Originally owned by Emperor Hirohito. Documented history with sporting “Maharaja' bodywork. Recent mechanical service with over $40,000 in invoices. In 1921, the Price Regent became the first Crown Prince of Japan to visit Europe, stopping in Scandinavia, Belgium, France, and England during the course of his six mouth tour. It is during his stay in the UK that he placed an order for what was almost universally regarded as the finest automobile in the world, a machine fit for an Emperor, the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. It was fitted with a touring body by Hooper and delivered with a C-type steering setup and a higher numerical drive ratio to take advantage of the lightweight bodywork, surely making it one of the best-performing cars in Japan and there are period photos of the Crown Prince riding in the back of the car during state occasions. The subsequent history of 58YG is not entirely documented, but the car remained in Japan until 1987 when it was discovered as a rolling chassis and eventually repatriated to the UK, where a comprehensive restoration was undertaken. With a fully restored chassis, the search began for a suitable body, and in 1995, the current body was purchased at Sotheby"s Hendon sale and installed on the restored chassis. It is believed that the body was constructed in Australia in the 1980s and is familiar to Rolls-Royce enthusiasts as “The Maharaja,' perhaps in reference to its parade-style seating. The car was treated to new upholstery and top in 2002 and more recently it enjoyed a major mechanical overhaul totaling more than $40,000 (receipts are available), ensuring that it is one of the most well-sorted Silver Ghosts available anywhere. The bodywork is tastefully finished in black with a traditional polished aluminum bonnet and elegantly formed wooden fenders, with interior details becoming styling features due to the very open design. Fit and finish are, of course, exemplary and the attention to detail on even the smallest pieces suggests that this was a labor of love. The wooden details sparkle, the paint has a deep, rich luster, and there"s no denying the visual impact of the traditional Rolls-Royce grille shell and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. The interior is sumptuously appointed in vivid red leather in traditional diamond-tufted patterns. The lovely wood instrument panel, floor boards, and tool box only add to the warm, inviting feeling of this Ghost and those natural surfaces show only very minimal signs of use. Comprehensive instrumentation will be at once familiar to any Silver Ghost aficionado, and even with right-hand drive, it is easy to get acclimated to the car"s driving position. There"s also an occasional top above the rearmost seat, which gives the Ghost a jaunty, sporting appearance and offers a modicum of weather protection should it be necessary. Mechanically, the car has been extensively serviced with more than $40,000 worth of receipts to document the work. As a result, it runs superbly with the legendary whisper-quiet operation for which these cars were famous. The engine is impressively detailed with polished brass and copper fittings, black cylinder jugs, and a raw aluminum crankcase. All systems are fully operational, as you would expect, and detailing is impressive. With oil pressure that is well within spec, 58YG is ready to drive anywhere in style and distinction. The chassis is equally well-detailed following the full restoration completed in the 1990s and shows only light signs of use. Comparing the car"s current components to those found in official Rolls-Royce records, it"s easy to see that aside from the front brakes, it remains in as-delivered spec. The recent refurbishment also includes a set of correct Blockley 3-stud tires on beautifully refinished wire wheels. With an interesting history and a comprehensive restoration, 58YG would make an outstanding addition to any Rolls-Royce collection of note. Fully serviced and ready to enjoy, it will also delight you with its road manners. This car is currently located in the United Kingdom. For more details and photos, please visit .
