1961 Porsche 356B Super Roadster s/n 89333 engine no. 803050 Bali Blue with Saddle Leather Interior Among Porsche enthusiasts, there is an ongoing debate about which model is the ultimate open 356. The Speedster has long been regarded as the most collectible, and does enjoy a purity of line that is very attractive, however the later Convertible D and B Roadster enjoy functional and mechanical updates that make the cars more pleasurable to use in the real world. Thus, enthusiasts wishing to enjoy their cars will be attracted to the 356B Roadster, whose low and rakish lines, more functional top and wind up windows represent the perfect compromise between the unmistakably sporty lines first embodied by the Speedster and the civilized refinement of the Cabriolet. Coupled with the mechanical updates on all 356B"s (including more substantial oil pump, more effective bumpers, improved ZF gearboxes and shift linkages, improved brakes, and stronger connecting rods). This particular car is a lovingly owned example that has been fastidiously maintained and improved by several collectors over the years. Restored in its entirety in about 2001, the car remains fresh and has also seen considerable maintenance in recent years, including a rebuilt engine about 3500 miles ago. This car was originally a Super, and has been fitted with a 1961 Super 90 spec engine as well as a camber compensator. The car comes with Certificate of Authenticity, which indicates that it was originally Aetna blue with grey interior. The car was owned by the same Southern California collector from 2006 to 2013, having purchased the car in a deal brokered by Aston Martin of New England and Paul Russell Co. It was previously owned by another collector who incidentally also previously owned a Mercedes 300SL Roadster that eventually found its way to the same Southern California owner by coincidence. Extensive service records are included from this period, which show the high standard of care that the car received, including regular maintenance, engine rebuild, rebuilt carburetors, rebuilt distributor, new exhaust system, wood-rimmed steering wheel, conversion to reproduction knock-off Rudge wheels (including brake drums and hubs), and addition of headrests. The instruments were also rebuilt by North Hollywood speedometer at this time, and the clock converted to quartz operation. The car has tremendous presence thanks to its stunning color combination and desirable specification, which includes knock-off wheels, headrests, and European headlights. It has great attention to detail and was clearly prepared by an enthusiastic owner with a strong eye for aesthetics. The body is extremely straight and displays very good fit and gaps. The paintwork was done to high standards and remains very nice, with minor wear to the front of the car from road use, as well as a few small stress cracks. Additionally, there were two scratches behind the right door that have been touched up. The chrome is very good with no pitting and only light surface scratching in selected areas. The glass and lights are excellent throughout. The wheels are stunning and wear period correct Michelin XAS tires. The interior was restored to very high standards and is in very good shape. The leather is mellowing nicely, with some patina and creasing in evidence. The carpets are correct German square weave material and floor mats are correct rubber items. The jambs are nicely detailed and the dashboard has been beautifully restored. The gauges are excellent, and the car is fitted with optional clock. The wood-rimmed steering wheel is beautiful and has a correct Porsche horn button with has a very minor crack. A modern stereo system has been discreetly installed, which includes a CD changer in the trunk. The engine compartment is nicely restored and quite clean. It is generally correct in appearance, including decals and finishes on the oil filter housing and fan shroud, as well as the Knecht air filters. The trunk has also been well-restored and nicely detailed. The spare is a matching knock-off wheel, held in place with correct leather strap. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a stunning 356 Roadster that is dressed to the nines. Fitted with a Super 90 motor and a host of desirable equipment, including knock-off wheels, European headlights, headrests, wood-rimmed steering wheel, luggage rack with suitcase, and clock, this car truly stands out. It is complete with tools, owner"s manual, Certificate of Authenticity, and service records from the current ownership period. Price: $195,000
