The Hudson Motor Car Company is remembered as a consummate innovator among Classic American Automakers. Noteworthy for their lighter and faster cars, Hudson is best known to the public by the famous "Twin H" Hornet, the first Detroit production car purpose built for stock car racing. NASCAR would not be the same if it were not for Hudson's Legacy of Speed. The Detroit Automaker was also known for pioneering features like dual brakes, hydraulic brakes with mechanical fail-safe braking, balanced crankshafts and production all-aluminum bodies. Like so many automakers before WWII, Hudson's sales were hamstrung by a floundering post-depression economy. The company could not recover the success it had achieved in the mid-late 20's, and Hudson would close it's doors permanently in 1954. Perhaps the rarest Hudson relic is the mythical Hudson Greater Eight Boattail Speedster. Only few collectors know if it's origins and even fewer - perhaps seven examples - exist today. Conceived by Hudson as a competitor to Auburn's alluring Boattail, Model T119 would be realized in an exclusive series of less than ten cars, with custom body styling by Murray, a luxury coachbuilder typically associated with marques like Packard, Lincoln, and Stutz. During this time period, Ray Dietrich had also designed sporting bodies for Murray, postulating a likely connection between this brilliant design and one of the greatest classic car designers around. This model would only be produced for one year, 1931. Volo Classic Cars is honored to showcase this ultra-rare Hudson Classic - with this example being the only car of it's line to have earned "Full Classic" status by the CCCA in 1976. Clad in a tri-tone of Tangerine Orange, Nasturtuim Yellow and Bangkok Brown, this speedster exhibits like a vibrant Art Deco portrait of a California sunset. The unique Tympanum shaped boat tail body evokes sensual lines similar in kind to the Duessenberg Speedsters built by Murphy. Notable features include a small Rumble Seat with room enough for one adult or two children, an integral stoneguard-over-grille, decorative center-bracketed electric horn, Hudson "Eagle" hood ornament, dual sidemount spares, side curtains and a steeply raked folding windshield. With all of it's stylistic refinement considered, by virtue of it's namesake this speedster was built for speed. It's lightweight body and strong running Great Eight engine will deliver speeds in excess of 90 miles and hour.
