1958 Devin SS Sports Racing Car s/n SR3-5 Red with Black Interior Bill Devin was a dedicated American racer who logged his first major victory arm wrestling a heavily modified Crosley Hot Shot to a first place finish in the 1949 Pebble Beach road race. With the early 1950s came a golden era for sports car racing in America, a time when ingenious, well-equipped privateers could successfully compete against the best that European and domestic automobile manufactures could offer. Devin was in the right place at the right time, and with the help of Irishman Malcolm MacGregor, produced a car that raced successfully in SCCA C-modified class against Ferraris, Listers, and Maseratis. Devin had been producing attractive, durable, light weight fiberglass bodies, which were sold as a kit, and fitted to a variety of chassis by their owners. Towards the latter half of the 1950s, MacGregor, a very gifted engineer who later worked for Ford of Europe, produced a tubular chassis for Devin, very similar to those later used by Carroll Shelby on the legendary Cobra. These new chassis incorporated every desirable late 1950"s racing car specification into a state of the art design. They included an independent suspension in the front and a De Dion tube setup in the rear. Steering was through a rack-and-pinion unit. 12 inch Girling disc brakes provided ample stopping power while the Dunlop wire wheels held the car firmly in place under heavy cornering. Around fifteen chassis were sent to Devin who finished them with 283cid Chevrolet V8 power, Borg Warner transmissions, and his very own lightweight bodies. These cars that had the style, sophistication, and performance of a Ferrari, but sold for less than half the price. In competition, the Devin was an almost immediate success with Pete Woods driving his car to the Sports Car Club of America C-modified National Championship. Other owners converted their cars into aggressive street machines, blending European styling with American hot rod performance and reliability. Indeed, Sports Car Illustrated measured 0-60 in 4.8 seconds! This particular car is one of the 15 genuine Devin SSs built, as verified by Devin historians, as well as the chassis plate, which is still affixed to the frame of this car. This car was previously owned and raced by Devin expert Chris Wickersham and retains its original and desirable round tube Irish built frame. This car is believed to be one of the few delivered new with fuel injection. The car was restored in the mid 1990s and then actively raced in historic events on the west coast, including the Monterey Historics, Wine Country Classic, and Coronado Speed Festival. The car proved competitive in races, including a podium finish at the Monterey Historics against prestigious seven figure thoroughbreds. The car was invited to be shown at Pebble Beach, where the car was exhibited in 1999. The car has log books covering the 1994-2005 period. The car was sold to its current owner shortly thereafter, and has been used as a street car since. In 2007, a milder street-appropriate engine was built for the car, a 327cid unit, which was dynoed at 331hp and 355 ft lbs of torque. The car was also fitted with a 5-speed transmission and aluminum Corvette center section (but still retaining de Dion rear end) to replace the historically weak Salisbury unit. Various other items have been replaced as well, including Koni shock absorbers, clutch master cylinder, and Wilwood rear calipers (the original rear calipers are included). The car"s racing motor, which is a 331cid fuel-injected unit with 13:1 compression ratio, is included, along with 4-speed gearbox. The car displays very good vintage racer cosmetics with a very good quality paintjob over a generally well-prepped body. There are a few chips and scratches from normal use, plus a few minor blemishes on the trunk lid. The wheels and tires are excellent, and the car is currently on Dayton wire wheels with Pirelli street tires, though a spare set of wheels with Dunlop racing tires is also included. The lights and lenses are in very good shape and the car is street-legal and street-registered. The interior has carpeting and attractively trimmed leather seats with red piping, both of which are in excellent order. The car has a full complement of gauges, including original Devin speedometer and tachometer, and Stewart Warner ancillary gauges, all of which are in excellent shape. The car is fitted with a Hurst shifter. The engine compartment is tidy and shows a sanitary installation of the small block Chevy engine. The valve covers are period Corvette items. The car has safety upgrades including Aeroquip fittings, stainless lines, and plumbed in fire system. The car is currently running an Edelbrock carburetor although a spare Rochester injection system is included. The car comes with numerous other spares including second set of wheels, Dunlop racing tires, straight pipes, a spare nose section, spare windscreens, and miscellaneous other parts. One of the most beautiful 1950s sports cars, the Devin SS is the ultimate Devin and represents a unique piece of history from the golden age of American sports car racing. This authentic and rare Devin SS has been enthusiastically owned and maintained with no expense spared and is eligible for vintage racing, rallies, and tours around the world. This example is current set up for street use, but is available with the necessary components to also go racing. Price: $250,000
