This is a 100 atching numbers 1969 Mustang convertible, which, by itself probably isn't so remarkable. What is remarkable is that it packs a thundering 428 Cobra Jet under the hood, one of only 50 such cars built in 1969. Typically reserved for the Mach I and fastback Mustangs, the 428 Cobra Jet was perhaps the most potent engine in the Ford catalog in 1969, except for perhaps the limited production Boss 429. Loaded with options like A/C, power steering, power disc brakes, a power top, and a deluxe interior, it neatly blurs the line between hard core street brawler and luxury cruiser. Check out these options: 428 CJ engine, Glass rear window, Power convertible top, GT Equipment Group, Select shift Cruise-O-Matic transmission, Visibility group, FR70x14 Wide Oval whitewall tires, Rocker panel moldings, Power steering, Power front disc brakes, Deluxe interior décor group, SelectAire air conditioner, AM/FM stereo radio, Tinted Glass—complete, Deluxe belts with warning light, All told, the options added $1733.83 to the car's bottom line, and were responsible for more than a third of the car's $4745.28 sticker price, making for one very expensive 1969 Mustang., Refinished in the original Wimbeldon White, it's a classic Mustang look. Not bright refrigerator white, and not quite cream, it's a soft, elegant color that even despite the powerful 428 under the hood, gives this car an upscale feel. The body panels are 100vriginal, and have been refinished to better-than-new condition in every way. Alignment is factory correct, and it wears a red rocker panel stripe that matches the bright red interior and breaks up all the white paint. And although this is not a ram-air car, it does proudly wear a correct 428 hood scoop and Cobra Jet badges, but little else to give away the monster lurking under the hood. If there's a more impressive sleeper than this one, I haven't seen it. Wow., On a car of this caliber, every piece of chrome and stainless has been polished and finished to new condition or replaced with an exact reproduction. Glass is correct and in excellent shape, and all the lenses and plastic bits are show quality. This one is extremely nice., Inside, you'll find the red vinyl bucket seat upholstery, which, according to Kevin Marti, makes this a one-of-one vehicle. What makes it even more special is that the interior is almost 100_riginal, suggesting that this car has received amazing care from the day it came home from the dealership. Those are the original seats, carpets, door panels and dash pad, and they're all remarkably well preserved. Apparently someone knew this car was special from the get-go, and it was never used as a regular vehicle and has always lived indoors. The deluxe interior included a lot of faux woodwork, which works just fine with this Mustang's split personality, although the lack of a console is puzzling. The A/C blows ice cold, the radio is the factory AM/FM unit (remember FM radio was a new invention in 1969, and an FM radio was a big deal), and there's a clock for the passenger to tick off the 13 or seconds this car requires to clear the quarter mile. Overhead there's a new black convertible top that folds into its well with the touch of a button, and is hidden by a matching red boot. In back, the trunk is nicely finished with a correct mat and a matching spare wheel and full-sized tire., Under the hood you'll find the Q-code 428 Cobra Jet engine, which is original to this car and has been rebuilt to stock specifications. It was nicely detailed when the car was restored some years ago, and is only a concours detail away from being show worthy once again. There's correct Ford Blue on the block, the unique non-ram air air cleaner with functional vacuum diverter valve, and the massive A/C compressor that dominates the engine bay. Hoses are correct reproductions and they use proper wire hose clamps, the valve covers are chrome “Powered by Ford' pieces that are used on all the Cobra Jets, and the correct decals and markings have been duplicated throughout., Underneath, there's a durable C6 3-speed automatic, making this one of only 30 convertibles equipped with a 428/automatic combination. The floors have been refinished in proper red oxide primer with just the right amount of Wimbledon White overspray at the rockers. Out back, there's a 9-inch full of 3.00 gears, which give this Mustang extremely long legs on the highway and make cruising a pleasure. The housing is finished in correct satin black with a red oxide center section, and a new exhaust system with proper resonators and transverse muffler was installed during the restoration. The only wheels you'll find on a GT like this are handsome styled steel pieces wearing 225/60/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials., Documentation is extensive, as it should be, and includes a window sticker and a Marti Report which both suggest that this was a special build car destined for a Ford executive or special program of some kind. This is not a garden-variety Mustang by any stretch of the imagination—the last time it changed hands, it was for over $160,000 and was probably worth every penny., There's nothing cooler than a car that just shouldn't exist. Someone smart was playing with factory option codes and combinations, and came up with this amazing machine that can't quite decide if it's a performance car or a luxury car. This is a car for the serious Mustang collector who thinks he's seen it all. There may be cars that have lower production numbers, but the fact that this one is so unusual and with such a broad array of options makes it unique among its peers.
