NEW PRICE! Older restoration of a California car. Functioning overdrive, power top, and gauges. Nice driving convertible that will stand out in a crowd. This 1948 Champion convertible is a very nice older restoration in the original color Gala Brown. Finish work was very good, and there is no evidence of rust or rot on this California convertible. For an inexpensive car, it has an upscale look today, with dramatic curves and a forward-moving shape that was designed by none other than Raymond Lowey. The doors fit well, the hood shuts with a pleasant click, and the decklid sits flush with the low-mounted rear fenders, making for a very tidy package. All the chrome is likewise restored, from the inset front grille to the decklid badge which cleverly disguises the trunk handle. Optional fog lights and a back-up lamp are fully functional, and the bumpers right below them have been restored and sparkle like new. The understated interior is typical 1940s elegant, with a strong Art-Deco influence throughout. The seats have been finished in brown leatherette, with simple seating surfaces and a minimum of detail. Matching door panels were crafted and augmented with the original bright stainless trim. The instrument panel is a beautiful engine-turned piece that encompasses the gauges and radio speaker. Speaking of the gauges, they appear original and unrestored, all of them fully functional save for the large clock that"s front-and-center. A row of knobs just below the instruments controls things like lights, the Overdrive, and the windshield wipers. Overhead, there"s a tan canvas power top that works properly, stowing itself with the touch of a button. The canvas is in good condition, but it"s older and the rear window panel is starting to stretch a bit, and you"ll note that the window itself is a correct 2-pane piece that is unique to Studebaker. The engine is the same 170 cubic inch inline-six that powered Studebakers before the war, and as a result, it"s one of the most durable, reliable, and easy-to-service powerplants of the period. It starts easily using the clutch pedal starter, and settles into a comfortable idle thanks to a freshly rebuilt carburetor and new fuel pump. It is no longer detailed for show, but it does wear correct Studebaker green paint on the block, and offers a lot of new components including plugs, wires, cap and rotor, so it runs quite well. With the 3-speed manual transmission, performance is actually quite energetic around town, and the overdrive is fully functional, so highway cruising is relaxed and fuel economy is impressive. There are no squeaks or rattles underneath, the exhaust system has a healthy grumble, and the brakes are solid and confidence-inspiring. Four 6.00-15 Denman wide whites have been fitted to the original wheels, and they look to have a lot of life left in them. Rugged, reliable, and downright stylish, this Champion convertible is a lot of top-down fun at an affordable price.
