1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A, Just 419 examples of the fabulous 540K Series were built in all different body styles. The Cabriolet A was an extremely rakish design with most ebeing built by the Sindelfingen design house in Germany. At twice the price of a V-16 Cadillac, very few were delivered in the U.S. market. Our car has a fully documented, 2-owner history since being sold at auction in Paris following World War II. Purchased in Europe and brought home by a U.S. Army officer, the car was cherished by that officer until 1970 at which he sold it to a neighbor of his who owned the car until his death in 2010. Copies of correspondence between the two owners as well as some fascinating documentation of the car's history are still present with the car. It was repainted in dark red and burgundy in 1970, the original leather was redyed at that time and a new tan convertible top was installed. Now, 40+ years later, the paint and leather should probably be redone. The original and rare chrome radiator stone guard and rear luggage rack are still present on the car as well as its original and extremely interesting radio, boot scrapers on the running boards and a winter cloth radiator cover.
