Just like the GTO started out as an option package on the Tempest line; the 442 in 1964 started out as option with the Cutlass model. It was option number B- 09 on the Cutlass. This changed in 1968 for the 442 when it actually became a model of its own instead of just an option for the Cutlass. The numbers for 442 meant 4-BARREL CARB; 4- SPEED & (2) DUAL EXHAUST. The name caught on. Even the automatic transmission was called a 442. This 442 convertible is a very loaded example. It has the heavy duty suspension with front & rear sway bars, big power disc brakes up front, am-fm radio, heavy duty radiator, power top & steering, the special wheels, console with the famous Hurst shifter (note the Hurst badges on the car) walnut dash, power antenna & air-conditioning & the very special tic-tok-tach. Believe it or not the tach & the clock do work. The motor was 400 cubic inches & was rated at 350 horsepower with a ground pounding 440 at only 3200 RPM. These cars were very fast & in the 60’s & 70’s they were a car to be avoided at the stop light to stop light battles. This particular 442 was owned by a very prominent collector in town. The history of this car as I know it is that it has lived in Texas a great deal of it s life & maybe all of its life. It appears to me that the interior of the car is original & it is in fantastic condition. It drives & handles extremely well & is a real blast to drive. The underside of the car is in excellent shape as far as condition & it would not take a lot to make it very nice under there. There were only 4295 convertible 442’s made in 1969 & I do not know how many were 4-speed but I am sure it is a very low number. Here is the serial number of the car & I will show you how to break it down & prove that it is a real 442 convertible. 344679Z102726: 3=Olds division; 44= 442; 67 = convertible body type; 9 =model year; Z = Freemont Plant; 102726 consecutive serial #.
