As we predicted a few years back 1977-1981 Pontiac Trans Ams have become arguably the hottest collector cars on the planet. The reason is simple: if you grew up in the mid-to-late 70s very few of the cars being offered by the big three had any appeal except for the Trans Am. You either had one your buddy had one your uncle had one or you wanted one. And if your local car show scene is anything like ours you've probably noticed more and more enthusiasts finally cashing in on that sentiment. Given market demand the wide availability of aftermarket support and the scorching appeal of these cars we expect this trend to continue for another 20 years. That's why NOW is the time to grab a correct highly original Trans Am to show and enjoy! This extremely cool 1978 F2 is a numbers matching investment grade car which combines enduring Pontiac performance with some of the best visual sizzle to ever come out of Detroit Michigan. If you're looking for a classic that you can drive enjoy and build some positive equity with here's your ticket!, Included with the sale of this cool old F-body is a stack of Pontiac Historic Services paperwork which highlights the following dealer invoice: FIREBIRD TRANS AM, SHIPPED: FEBRUARY 3RD 1978, DELIVERED TO: CARROL PONTIAC INC., OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT: A01: Soft ray tinted glass ($66), B37: Front and rear floor mats ($21), B84: Body side molding ($42), B93: Door edge guards ($11), C60: Custom air conditioning ($508), CC1: Removable roof hatches ($625), CD4: Controlled cycle windshield wipers ($32), N33: Tilt steering wheel ($69), QCY: GR70x15 white letter tires ($51), UM2: Delco-GM AM/FM stereo radio with 8-track player ($341), WW7: Hood decal ($66), Y92: Lamp group, YJ8: cast aluminum wheels, INVOICE AMOUNT: $6603.09, INVOICE TOTAL: $6767.09, MANUFACTURERS SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $7942, Assembled at GM's Norwood Ohio manufacturing facility in February of 1978 this striking gold Trans Am was shipped right up the road to Carroll Pontiac in Clairton Pennsylvania and promptly sold to its first eager owner. Based on the car's stellar appearance its body has benefitted from immaculate maintenance for the past 34 years and has never been wrecked or significantly damaged in any way. On top of that 1002olid body a great looking coat of correct GM code 50 Solar Gold paint displays the kind of slick shine that only two-stage urethane can reflect. And an awesome brown yellow and gold screamin' chicken hood decal combines with color-keyed ''Trans Am'' call outs to crank the car's visual sizzle from 'radical' to 'out of this world'., With Pontiac striving hard to be GM's official European sports car alternative Trans Ams were devoid of the virtual pounds of brightwork found on most American metal. But as we all know the cars carry plenty of unmistakable styling elements which identify them as something very special. Up front a straight and glossy urethane bumper hangs a bright red arrow head between clean black headlight inserts to provide Pontiac's familiar split grille face. Behind that bumper a ''6.6 litre'' branded hood anchors like-new glass which is bordered by bright stainless trim. And at the top of the car dark tinted Fisher T-tops ride above chrome GM door handles and correct black and red screamin' chicken B-pillar emblems. At the sides of the car striking brown and yellow ''Trans Am'' call outs hang between traditional Pontiac fender vents body-matched sport mirrors and correct fiberglass wheel spoilers. Behind those wheel spoilers an optional T93 black rear valence frames showroom fresh tail lights. And at the back of the car a straight D80 rear decklid spoiler centers a third ''Trans Am'' call out above correct Firebird exclusive side splitter exhaust tips., Under the car's hood you'll find an all-original L78 V8 which wears a correct 500557 casting number a correct 143201 partial VIN and a July (G) 28th (28) of 1977 (7) casting date. Thanks to government mandated emissions standards performance had almost been legislated out of existence; and that left the Trans Am suffering a bit of an identity crisis. This bird's L78 punching in at an even 400 cubic inches combined the largest muscle car engine you could buy with Pontiac's proven ''6X'' head design to produce a higher compression ratio and provide enough low end grunt to create one of the fastest pony cars on the market. At the top of the engine an original Rochester 4-barrel carburetor rides under a familiar shaker scoop. Below that carburetor original GM corporate blue paint coats the entire block and original cast iron manifolds send spent gases into a high performance factory exhaust system. All the hard parts around the motor from the belt driven accessories to the brake booster and air conditioning hanging on the fire wall appear to be factory original; and as expected tags markings and stamps are just where they should be from the date coded core support to the gold painted cowl tag. The car's clean engine bay and hood are covered in a nice coat of GM satin black paint; and there's fresh belts fresh hoses and even a fresh battery., Take a gander under this fully sorted Trans Am and you'll find a super solid 34 year old undercarriage which tells the story of years of excellent maintenance and features straight and rust-free floor pans which still display most of their factory overspray. Behind the engine an original Turbo-Hydramamtic 350 3-speed automatic transmission which wears a correct 8640399 case number sends power to a familiar GM 10 bolt rear end that's loaded with street friendly gears. The car's original suspension which includes Trans Am spec sway bars shocks and springs combines with power front disc brakes and rear drums to provide great stopping and handling. And at the corners power flows to the pavement through fresh 235/60 Goodyear Eagle GT II radials that are wrapped around correct 15 inch cast aluminum wheels which are detailed with both gold paint and red bird center caps. While most of this Trans Am's original exhaust system seems to be present and accounted for it now wears a fresh transversely mounted factory replacement muffler that breathes into aluminized tail pipes and traditional stainless Firebird tips. All of the cars hardware and bushings appear to be in good shape; and out back a replacement fuel tank is both solid and leak free., Inside this awesome Pontiac you'll find a stylish blend of pristine white vinyl and original black trim which creates a great looking correct GM code 11R cockpit. The car's original seats are comfortably firm and carrying vinyl that seems newer than typical survivor attire look like they should be in a fresh frame-off restoration. Below those seats like-new black carpet shows minimal wear and tear and has likely been carefully protected by the car's rubber floor mats the whole time it's been installed. Between those seats a simple black console props a tall armrest behind a chrome trimmed automatic shifter. And above those seats a stain-free headliner is stretched tight around the cars tinted tops. At the front of the car an excellent looking engine turned dash houses crystal clear gauges above controls for heat and air conditioning and a never removed Delco-GM stereo. At the sides of the car thick white door panels frame chrome handles for both the doors and windows in bright stainless trim. In front of the driver a familiar Formula steering wheel spins a 'red bird' horn button around a correct tilt column. And at the back of the cockpit the car's pristine trunk hangs original decklid decals above a correct two-tone mat and a spacesaver spare tire., The sale of this clean Trans Am includes a stack of Pontiac Historic Services paperwork which comes complete with a replica window sticker and the dealer invoice outlined above., Highly authentic investment grade pony cars from the late 70s are incredibly hard to find! This great looking 1978 Trans Am is extremely cool because it features a numbers matching drivetrain an correct interior and correct Solar Gold exterior paint.
