"Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale August 16th- 18th, 2012 at Russo and Steele's 12th Annual Monterey California Auction. Please contact us for more information., In 1953, A.C. introduced a new sports car that would eventually change the company's fortunes. It had a very modern design courtesy of John Tojiero, with open two-seater coachwork, an aluminum-alloy body, and built atop a lightweight tubular chassis that had a fully independent suspension and powered by a six-cylinder engine. Three years later, a 'Bristol' version was introduced which gave the car even more performance. It included three carburetors, optional front-disc brakes and a four-speed gearbox. The engine was placed farther back in the chassis to enhance the Ace's handling., The 'Bristol' became a popular car in the racing community, even making appearances at LeMans in 1957 and 1958. The Ace would continue to evolve over the years, eventually becoming the basis for Carroll Shelby's Cobra., The styling, of course, is what makes the Ace so iconic. John Tojeiro designed a clean, unadorned aluminium body that, while certainly sharing some Italian cues, is unmistakably British. When the Ace became the Cobra, it gained numerous bulbous flares to cover the necessary wide tires. While the smoother shape of the narrow-bodied Ace looks less menacing, it looks more like a pure sports car., This AC Roadster was originally ordered and invoiced as a standard ""UK Market"" AC Ace with high-compression (8.0:1) 2.0-liter ACE engine, No. CLB-2392. It retained this engine for awhile until being converted with a late specification Bristol engine, No. 100D2/1079., Chassis AE1016 was ordered new by European Cars Company Ltd., of London. It was ordered new and shipped from the AC Factory in Thames Ditton on February 28th, 1959. The original exterior color was ""Bright Blue Metaline"" and it was fitted and still retains a red full leather interior. The original hood and tonneau cover were both black and remain this way today., This is a late specification AC Roadster that features the front Girling disc brakes and four-speed gearbox with electrically actuated over-drive. It is titled, identified and registered in all documents as a 1957 model to allow it entry to better rallies, races and tours but is in fact a late specification, 1959 model., The European Cars Company Ltd, sold the car new to the Davies Car Centre Ltd at 22-34 Horn Lane, Acton, London W3. They in turn sold it to the first private owner, Mr. K.L. Bowers, who also resided in Acton, London. The car was issued and remained for most of its life on UK registration plates ""605 UMH""., The car was carefully preserved and well cared for throughout its life which has seen it travel to the four corners of the world including a long-stint in a private Japanese Museum Collection for nearly 20 years just prior to our purchase., Despite the engine upgrade and color change, this is a remarkably well preserved example have no rust or accident issues ever, anywhere.",, Auction
