"Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale August 16th- 18th, 2012 at Russo and Steele's 12th Annual Monterey California Auction. Please contact us for more information., The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to its top-range vehicles, including 4-door sedans, produced from 1959 to 1968, and 2-door coupes and cabriolets from 1961 to 1971. The W111, was initially attributed only to 6-cylinder cars with 2.2-litre engines. The luxury version with big-block 3-litre engines were given the chassis code W112. The entry-level vehicles with 4-cylinder engines were called W110. All three versions W110, W111, and W112, in both 2- and 4-door bodies, were built on an identical chassis., Production began in late 1960, and in February of the next year the coupe was premiered in Stuttgart for the 75th anniversary of the opening of Mercedes-Benz Museum. The convertible followed at the Frankfurt Auto Show a few months later; the car was almost identical to the coupe, with the soft-top roof folded into a recess behind the rear seat and covered by a tightly fitting bag. Unlike the previous generation of two-door ponton series, there was only one model for the 2-door vehicle, the 220SE on both versions, with the identical M127 2195 cc engine. Prices in 1962 were 32,500 for the coupe and 36,000 NLG for the cabriolet. Options included a sliding sunroof for the coupe, automatic transmission, power steering, and individual rear seats., This is an extremely rare Mercedes-Benz 220SE by any measure. This particular Short Wheel Base Cabriolet is an original ""SE"" or special equipment model fitted with all of the late features as well as BOSCH Mechanical Fuel-Injection from new. It was one of the last examples produced and finished late in the Fall of 1960 as a 1961 Model. It was sequentially the 74th to last of all of the 220S and SE's models before production ended., Only 350 or so Mercedes Benz 220 SE Cabriolets were hand assembled each year during the normal production run from 1958-1960. The last of the 220 SE models like this car are equipped with a 2.2 liter overhead cam six-cylinder engine with the Bosch MFI and a four-speed manual transmission with shifter on the column. As such, a top speed of more than 100 MPH can easily be obtained., Chassis 003842 was special ordered and sold new as a 1961 model in normal or ""standard European"" configuration. It was also built with the normal four-speed manual transmission and the again standard ""left-hand-drive"" steering configuration., The upper body work was painted in DB190 or Graphite Grey and the lower body work in contrasting DB40 or black. The interior was standard black, full-leather with contrasting medium-dark wood trim. An extremely expensive optional Blaupunkt ""world"" Multi-Band radio was fitted with hidden aerial. Optional fitted luggage also accompanied the car., Little else is known about the car's earlier history and subsequent owners until it was given an extremely comprehensive, ""frame-up"" restoration to impossibly high standards but leaving most of the exterior body work and trim untouched saved for one known repaint. Since the completion of all work, the car has covered just over 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) of easy and careful use., This example is sold with some period documents as well as luggage and tools.",, Auction
