"Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale August 16th- 18th, 2012 at Russo and Steele's 12th Annual Monterey California Auction. Please contact us for more information., 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350-H Fastback (SFM6S1571), For 1966, Carroll Shelby's GT350s benefited from a host of mechanical revisions that smoothed out the rough edges of a car, which, to many of its drivers, felt too much like a road-going race car. Resultant sales increased thanks to Peyton Cramer's pitch to Hertz Rental Car Company. Shelby's skilled marketing guru was asked to bring in larger-scale fleet sales for the company; he returned from Hertz with an order for 1,000 cars., The Hertz Corporation had decided to jump on the performance bandwagon, certainly the major automotive marketing mantra of the mid-1960s. Hertz, as a brave marketing concept, had previously created “The Hertz Sports Car Club' intending to provide a limited number of high performance rentals to customers “over 25 and qualified to handle such vehicles'. In reality, any young lead foot with his dad's credit card was likely “qualified'. For a unique identity, most of the Hertz GT350s were liveried in black with gold stripes. Some of the earlier GT350-H cars had four-speed transmissions, but after checking in more than a few rental returns with burned and slipping clutches, some with bits of racing numbers still stuck to the doors, the majority of later cars came equipped with automatic transmissions., The GT350-H featured here is a proper and original example of one of the most interesting chapters in the motorsport saga of Carroll Shelby. It left Shelby's operation on April 17, 1966 bound for Dallas, Texas, where it was one of few “rent-a-racers' sold new by Norm Williams Ford to Hertz. The car has always lived in Texas, Florida and as of 1988, it arrived in California. The black/gold exterior is in excellent condition as it received a bare-metal repaint., It comes with the original fiberglass/steel frame hood. The body is very straight and rust-free throughout. All exterior components and features have been restored to period-correct specifications. The interior is fully restored with all new chrome trim, seat frames, upholstery, carpet, dash components, and new Ray Brown competition seat belts. The factory AM radio actually works. The car's mechanicals have undergone a complete rebuild of the engine, transmission, suspension, and a complete restoration of the third member. Completion of the restoration occurred in 2011-2012., The motor is the original numbers matching block with all correct date codes on all major parts, including HiPo heads with correct valve train. The engine underwent a complete restoration of all nuts, bolts and other engine bay components for a concours correct presentation. Complete photo documentation is provided. The original Type C Servo HiPo automatic transmission is with this car. Also present are very detailed records of the car's maintenance and restoration, including invoices for engine, body, and transmission work, restoration records from California dating back to 1989, and an original owner's manual. Of particular interest is the original documentation from Shelby Motors including the original Bill of Sale, detailing the car's original delivery and option costs; the addition of “Hertz special wheels' and an optional radio brought the grand total to $3,792.25., This is an award winning car having won Third Place at the Dana Point Concours d'Elegance in both 2011 and 2012 and First Place at the Cobra/Shelby Owners Club Concours d'Elegance in 2012. The car is fully documented in the Shelby American Automobile Club Registry.",, Auction
