"Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale August 16th- 18th, 2012 at Russo and Steele's 12th Annual Monterey California Auction. Please contact us for more information., Bill Devin built a car that had the style, sophistication and performance of a Ferrari but sold for far less. The Ferrari prancing horse commanded a high price due to its pedigree and Devin decided to exploit the market offering a nearly identical vehicle at a far more affordable price., Devin had a history of racing that included a win at the first Pebble Beach race in 1949 while driving a modified Crosley Hot Shot. Later he entered the fiberglass body business where he sold hundreds of lightweight but durable bodies at just under $300 a piece. Near the close of the 1950's, his company was producing nearly 100 bodies per week and shipping them throughout the world., Irishman Malcom MacGregor approached Devin with a sports car that he had built. It was complete without a body. Devin was impressed with the design and soon chassis development was taking place in Ireland. The rolling chassis were then shipped to Devin in Elmonte, California where he would finish the assembly. It included an independent suspension in the front and a De Dion tube setup in the rear. Steering was through a rack-and-pinion unit. 12 inch Girling disc brakes provided ample stopping power while the Dunlop wire wheels held the car firmly in place under heavy cornering., Around fifteen chassis were sent to Devin who finished them with Chevrolet V8 power, Borg Warner transmission, chromed exhaust pipes, and lightweight bodies. Ferrari's of the day were fetching around $12,000 while a comparable Devin racer cost just under $6000., On the racing circuit the vehicles quickly proved their potential. One of the Devin racers was driven by Pete Woods who won the C-modified Championship. Many of the others were converted into road friendly vehicles and purchased by customers who were looking for a car that could get them noticed., Devin SS Number SR5-1, as the last car built, has features not found on previous SS's. The following is a list of components found on the car: The Engine is a 331 cubic inch Chevy block with steel crank, forged 4340 steel rods and speed-pro 12-1 forged pistons. Heads are 67 Chevy 462 castings ported and matched. Compression ratio 11.8 to 1, the Cam is Schnieder, and the Manifold is a Devin single 4 BBL, with Holley carb and Mallory electronic tach drive distributor topping off the engine., It is equipped with a Steel scatter-shield houses an aluminum flywheel, center force dual friction clutch and hydraulic throwout bearing, Racing transmission similar to a Richmond super T-10 sends power to a 3:55 Posi rear end in a Devin cast aluminum housing. A Watts link centers the de Dion 4 bar axle with coil over shocks. It has Koni shocks on all corners, the Rear calipers are 11 inch girling aluminum mounted inboard, and the Rear hubs are aluminum & turn Dayton/Devin 72 spoke knock off wheels shod with Hoosier vintage TD tires., It has a 15 gallon fuel cell with Holley electric fuel pump, front suspension is MGA with 12 inch Devin aluminum calipers, Dayton/Devin knockoffs and Hoosiers, and the steering is Morris minor, ""A"" arms are aluminum with coil over shocks. The car weighs only 2060 pounds with fuel and is wicked quick., SOLD ON BILL OF SALE",, Auction
