At first glance it might be easy to underestimate this wonderful 1954 Ford Customline coupe. Just your basic black 2-door right? Well yes and no. Underneath that extremely well-finished bodywork you'll find a spectacular period-perfect tuck-and-roll interior and powering it is a warmed-over Y-block V8 with some of the most gorgeous exhaust headers I've ever seen. Ordinary? Not by a long shot! I think it's actually the rolling stock that makes this car seem so low-key. Lose those whitewalls and you'll find that the brilliant black finish pops and all that factory-original chrome trim defines the shape. Great customizers know that leaving things alone is always smarter than radical alterations with questionable taste behind them. So what does that mean with this wonderful Ford? It means you get a beautifully finished body that enhances everything that was already great about the design all of it finished to hot-rod standards. This car has an awesome '60s custom vibe to it that's refreshing compared to today's often over-the-top hardware. The interior is where this Ford really shines. Beautifully stitched red and white vinyl works with the factory seats to create a unique driving environment-as one of my colleagues said we're practically fighting over who gets to move this one around the showroom. The original Ford Astra-Dial control panel (AKA instrument panel) features a ribbon of engine-turned aluminum that would later show up in the 1955 Thunderbird and a trio of Sunpro auxiliary gauges hangs under the dash matching the column-mounted tach. Note that this car is an original radio delete piece and no modern radio has been shoehorned into the slot. Listen to the melodic Y-block instead! The engine was all-new for 1954 and replacing the venerable flathead was no easy task. Fortunately the years have been kind to the Y-block and it remains a reliable durable and surprisingly upgradeable package that makes all the right sounds. Like the rest of the car the engine bay is simplicity where beauty is in the details. Bright red paint on the engine contrasts with the satin black inner fenders and chrome valve covers and a Moroso air cleaner add some flash. Those Fenton headers are beautifully made and are the only externally visible upgrade although this sucker runs like it has a lot more than the stock 130 horsepower thanks to a -race cam and an Edelbrock carburetor. Backed by a 4-speed manual which is an unusual selection in a car of this vintage it cruises easily and it's a blast to shift with the rumbling Flowmasters singing their song. Modern tube shocks smooth out the ride and a Ford 8-inch rear with a custom driveshaft ensures reliable cruising under any conditions. It rides on steel wheels with original hubcaps and those whitewall radials I mentioned earlier. There's obviously way more money invested in this car than is reflected in the asking price. A stylish unusual cruiser that you don't see every day. Call now! $27,995 ,, Advertiser Since 2008
