Studebaker which traced its origins to the Conestoga wagons of the Gold Rush and whose wagons ambulances and gun carriages put Americas Union forces on wheels reached the sixth decade of the 20th century gravely weakened but still capable of producing stylish potent and important automobiles. Derived from Raymond Loewys breakthrough 1953 Starliner coupe design the Hawk was introduced in 1956 and represented a fresh original approach to the sports car concept. Its appeal was immediate and over the next few years the Hawks several variants accounted for a substantial share of Studebakers production. This 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk is powered by Studebakers 289 cubic inch V-8 with dual exhausts and an automatic transmission power steering power brakes pushbutton radio radial tires with narrow whitewalls and full hubcaps. It has come from a long term owner who showed it frequently and trophied regularly. It is a straight attractive well-sorted car with nice paint sound chrome and a good interior. Painted bright red with a matching interior and black carpets and door panels it has wonderful eye-appeal. The engine compartment is attractively and correctly done to factory standards. The woodgrain dashboard attractively displays the GT Hawks purposeful round gauges and speedometer.
