1959 MERCEDES BENZ 220S, Mercedes-Benz has a long and proud tradition and reputation that was built by years of domination on the raceway, superior build quality, and undeniable beauty. The cars they constructed are legendary and well renowned. Their tradition continued with the 220S and 300 model range. The 220S was offered in saloon, coupe, and convertible configuration. They featured leather seating and exotic materials used throughout. The wood trim was a very high quality mahogany. Under the hood was a 2195 cc alloy straight six-cylinder engine with single overhead camshaft, twin Solex downdraft carburetors, and a 7.6:1 compression ratio. In early Mercedes-Benz history, the "S-Class" designation was used colloquially, typically referring to the largest and most spacious luxury vehicle in the company's lineup. In some cases, it also applied to vehicles requiring premium (remember high-test?) fuel or due to the higher compression ratio and output of the company's top-of-the-line engines. The 220S (W128) was produced in limited numbers beginning in the mid-1950's and continuing until October of 1959. A total of 3,429 examples were produced with only 2178 being convertibles over the entire run. The Mercedes-Benz W128 was a six-cylinder automobile that was available in sedan, coupe, or cabriolet body styles and were produced from 1956 on. Its main model, the 220S, was the last of the "Ponton" series which had design roots and styling cues beginning in 1953 with the Mercedes-Benz 180 Sedan. The 220S featured a unitized body/frame construction and fully independent suspension. All models were fitted with a 2.2 liter version of the Straight 6 gasoline engine with aluminum head, overhead camshaft, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. An automatic clutch was available with the column-mounted four-speed manual transmission. At the time, the cabriolet was priced similar to Cadillac's Eldorado Biarritz. Nearly every interior surface of the coupe and cabriolet was covered in leather or wood, and matching leather luggage was available. However, power steering, windows, air conditioning, and an automatic transmission were not available. In the S-Class lineage, the W128 was succeeded by the "Fintail" series starting with the W111 line in 1960, although the 220 SE now in cabriolet form would continue. The flagship model of Mercedes-Benz originated from the modest "Ponton" model, a six-cylinder sedan produced with the W180/W128 chassis lines. The W180/128 were first introduced in the mid-to-late 1950's, and came to encompass the 220a, and 220S models. Both "Ponton" models were produced through the 1950's. In 1959, the 'Fintail' was introduced, starting with the new 220Sb. The 'Fintail' series replaced the "Ponton" in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The 125 horsepower was sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed column shift gearbox. Braking power was provided by servo-assisted drums.
